The Umpqua Lighthouse at Winchester Bay towers over the beach where the Umpqua River empties into the Pacific Ocean. The 65-foot lighthouse was constructed in 1890 after the first Umpqua River Lighthouse, built in 1857, next to the river mouth, collapsed in a storm.
Coastal History
Where the Umpqua meets the pacific
Nestled where the Umpqua River converges with the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean lies a tapestry of Oregon Coast history woven with tales of exploration, trade, and resilience. Over time, settlements like Winchester Bay and Reedsport emerged, their histories shaped by the maritime industries that flourished along the coast.
